Would people have more of their own identity if it wasnt for the media?
Imagine there is no newspapers, magazines, movies, hollywood, advertising….how much more do you think people would be themselves without having to look to one of these medias for guidance.
Take magazines for example: They are forever telling people, what is hot, what is not, whats in fashion, what is not. Pretty much giving people an expectation to live up to.
Also i won’t even go into the news media and advertising.
In my opinion, i try not to follow any of it. for things like media i try and check the facts myself without listening to them. For fashion, i pretty much wear what i feel comfortable in.
Magazines i only buy if its something i am interested in, like a hobby magazine. I don’t buy anything like mens health which tries to tell you your not hot if you don’t have a 6 pack and work out 5 days a week. I eat healthy and am an avid runner, so i know i don’t need this book.
What are you opinions on how the media affects peoples individuality.
I have to agree.
Is it ironic that as we grow up in this century we want to be “like that person on T.V.”?
I think the media has a big effect on how people go about identifying themselves.
T.V. portrays vanity as an “acceptable” lifestyle, where materials have more importance than human life itself, where the poor attempt to mimic the rich they helplessly tube everyday on the T.V.
Most lower classes in the U.S claim “they don’t have money for education” but it doesn’t stop them from spending hundreds of dollars on stereo systems, rims, SUV’s, purses, jewelry, brand name clothing, etc.
How often do you see the idiots driving around in a Escalade with 22″ rims and Bose stereo system? That could of been his college tuition.
Do you ever wonder why women are so obsessed with designer purses? Too much T.V.?
Or men obsessed with matching shoes & shirts?
The media tells the masses to jump, and we say “how high?”
