17-year-old atheist wearing a rosary?

Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty both wear rosaries around their necks, and it’s obviously not for religious reasons. Could I wear a few black rosaries in my neck, mixed with other beaded necklaces, without looking like a religious fanatic? I’m 17, a male, and atheist, and I don’t people to think I’m one of those creepy religious people. My style does ressemble Pete Doherty’s look, he’s been my fashion inspiration and I do try to copy many of his looks. So what do you think? SHould I wear it with the cross (Jesus’ face) upside down? Like on my chest? Isn’t that how non-religious people wear it? Help.

I’m an atheist too, by the way. Not that it matters.

One of the wonderful things about living in a free country is that there are very few restrictions on how you express yourself.

Just be aware that there are repercussions to how you CHOOSE to express yourself.

The rosary means nothing to me personally, however offending others DOES mean something to me. Even if I thought the rosary was pretty upside down, I wouldn’t wear it because adorning myself with something pretty is less important than being courteous to others.

Does wearing the rosary mean something to Amy or Pete? Maybe they have some reason they wear it.

What would be your reason?

I’d like to suggest that your style isn’t “similar” to theirs if you wear the rosary, your style is COPYING theirs.

You seem like a nice guy or else you wouldn’t be asking this question. I’ll bet your artistic too. Can you design a piece of jewelry that is similar to the rosary but wouldn’t offend others? (Sorry if I’m ignorant…I’m such an atheist I don’t even know what a rosary looks like).

If you want to wear it – go for it. It IS a free country.

I just hope your reason for offending people has more significance than simply mimicking celebrity.
