How likely is it that I will be able to get into FIT (FashionInstituteOfTechnology) in NYC? Details Follow!?
Hi,
I’m a high school junior, who lives in a small town in NC. I want to major in Fashion Merchandising. I have around a 3.7 GPA, I’m a girl scout, which means I’ve done a lot of community service and I’m on the school newspaper. As of right now I’ve only taken art 1, but I got at A in it, and i’m taking Drafting now, and Art 2 next semester. I took Fashion Merchandising in my freshman year, and a business class last year and got A’s in both. Even though art isn’t a huge part of fashion merchandising, I would think it was important to get into a school like FIT. How likely is it that I would get it in? Please be very honest…I feel like FIT would be a great way to start my career in the fashion industry, and the only fashion school i will be able to afford…
Thanks!! ; )
I think it’s awesome you are giving yourself a strong background in art. It will really help you in the long run. As far as admissions at fashion schools like FIT, they usually ask you to submit a portfolio of fashion sketches or assign an admissions project. These are what makes up the majority of their decision to let you in. Being a girl scout and doing community service means nothing to them. They want to see you’ve worked in retail or have had an internship or volunteer opportunity in the fashion industry (like helping out at a fashion show or organizing a community event related to fashion.) Your GPA will show them that you are both smart and artistic, so that’s a plus. But keep in mind that someone could be the dumbest in school at things like math or history, and get accepted over you because they have experience or have a better portfolio than you. Stay positive and make this year count, go out there and get some solid experience in fashion.
