I hate to sew and I always mess up…FASHION DESIGNER?

I love to draw, sketch, paint, dance, sing and write…and I loooove fashion. My dream is to be a singer, dancer and a fashion designer…however my sewing sucks…I try real real hard and i still mess up…
I can’t wait till my 4hr class ends..and I dread it,,I just hate sewing..but i love to create clothes, design, paint still life, observation…etc. i luuuv to dance and sing. i just starte out in fashion because it’s the only thing that I can go to school for so I’d rather start it now at 18..but I’m confused..should I be a fashion editor or fashion illustrator..then go out for my singing and dancing career??…..[sighs] confused…

If you really hate sewing but still love fashion, perhaps a fashion illustrator is a better choice. Is there guidance department in your school where they can give you some assistance? You might want a bit of extra tutoring in sewing, it can be frustrating, especially if you haven’t sewn before coming to fashion school. The number one reason for dropping out of fashion school is sewing. Are you using an industrial like a juki or consew or a singer20U? Those guys can be scary fast and scary loud! I had a consew that hated me, I replaced him with a 20U that is much more even tempered, his bobbin doesn’t try to escape!

If the sewing is driving you too crazy but you still want to create you can become a textile artist, embellishing blank pre made goods like t’s scarves, bags, etc. You can make a good living decorating and painting silks and canvasses, dying fabrics, embroidery, embellishment; there are many creative options where you can dress up things that are already made.

I know someone in the place where I have my studio, it’s one of those big old factories taken over by artsy people and he buys blank bags and shirts and shawl and dyes and paints them and makes them look special and spectacular. He hated sewing too. Sometimes we cooperate and I use one of his painted things in a dress or top or something.

And sewing is a skill that needs to be practiced and learned, it doesn’t come naturally, I used to have a box stuffed with failures back when I was learning how to sew and design.
