Why did the fashion change during the Great Depression?

The Roaring Twenties was a frivolous time with women bobbing their hair and hem lines going up and up to show more leg and the dances were hardly sedate. They were after the good life. Then came the crash.
Party time was over. Women as well as men had to buckle down and get to work. They didn’t want to remind people of the empty headed party girls so hem lines went down below the knee and they let their hair grow long again. The flashy colors and shoes of the 20s were replaced with sensible shoes and a lot of somber colors more appropriate for the work place.
Partying was out. You concentrated on feeding your family and staying out of debt. No one wanted to be seen as a party girl in the 30s.
