Could someone offer some budget fashion tips for bigger women’s work apparel?
Where I work, “buisiness casual” is the norm, so I don’t have to deal with anything like pant suites, at least, but I can’t seem to find a happy medium between that and t-shirt and jeans that’s within my budget – mainly Wal-Mart type department stores.
Blouses just hang off my bust and hide what little waist I do have, but I look like Humpty Dumpty if I tuck a shirt in. Most departments stores don’t carry much in the way of slacks for my size except for tapered or straight-legged. Skirts and dresses are sort out of the question since I’m required to wear shoes with steel-toes because I have to walk through the factory to get to my desk.
Any suggestions on how to deal with these “limitations” or good online stores that are less pricey?
You and I have similar issues. First I have to say that I found when I gained weight that I had to be willing to spend more money than I was used to in order to get things that fit properly and were…well, not tacky, etc.
I would suggest trying to build a work wardrobe that may have less variety than you’d like at first, but you can build on. For instance I have a couple pairs of pants from GAP online – they have additional sizes -that I thought were ridiculously expensive but do last and are easy to work with. (They also have wide leg and flare which are not the trend but look best on me.) I have also gotten pants from Old Navy’s plus size section. Torrid (torrid.com) is expensive but I have purchased a couple things there also that I thought added something a little less plain. These suggestions are easy when/if you find yourself really needing some things and don’t have time to look around.
Target is also a possible choice, if you have the right shape because it seems everything is made along the same lines…for instance I can’t wear their pants.
You CAN find things at stores like TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Value City, but I find you have to be willing to look around and not be looking for something in particular (i.e. black pants) or you will end up very frustrated.
Also try Ebay! I have found new items that other women bought online and have never worn.
As general advice, I know exactly what you mean with the button down blouses…I almost never wear them. Look for the tailored blouses – I think they have some at Old Navy online …or wear a wide belt – they have styles like that at Torrid sometimes and you’d feel like it draws too much attention but it really works. Probably you will like the way v-necks look on you the best. And if you’re more comfortable in/think you look better in a skirt or dress, I’d wear it anyway lol.
ARE YOU A BBW ??????????
